Let me update you on the moments from Day 6 through Day 22 that have made my days happy.

Day 6:

I drive to the gas pump, turn off the ignition, reach for my wallet, and climb out the car. As I was about to swipe my VISA card, I realize that the boyfriend beat me to it. He was already filling up my tank. Awwwww!

Day 7:

I’m at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, running as late as ever, when I run into Mike Epps, who is cracking jokes like his usual self. I arrive late to my gate and the flight attendant relieves my stress by booking me for a later flight, without any delay. I reach my destination an hour later than my original flight. Hallelujah.

Day 8:

Eating lunch with a friend I hadn’t seen in more than 5 years. The old adage holds validity, “Like fine wine, friends get better with time.”

#100HappyDays: Day 5

wpid-20140504_201042.jpgNo one holds their head higher than a woman with a fresh ‘do. I am no different. Believe me when I say that when I get my hair done, I feel like a brand new woman. I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to. I feel more confident. I feel more loved. I feel more respected. Women, and Black women especially, spend hundreds of dollars each year to get their hair to behave the way they want it to. You can tell me that it’s outrageous to spend $200 on a new ‘do, but if you understand the feeling a woman has when she gets out that chair and steps into the world, you’ll understand why a woman feels tempted to spend half her rent on a new look.

In a world full of unrealistic size 2 models shoved in our faces, a woman is always second guessing whether she looks good enough. She compares herself. She puts herself down because she feels like she can’t look like Beyoncé or like the airbrushed model on the cover of Allure. No one can place a dollar amount on body image, self-respect, and self-esteem. There are no limits to what a confident woman can achieve. I’m not saying that a new hairstyle is the answer to self-esteem issues, but I am saying that it helps.

Today on my 5th day of #100HappyDays, my new hairstyle is what made me happy. Now, I’m not going to delve deeply into the 8 hours it took to achieve this look and the pain I endured from the yanking and pulling that braiding requires. But I will say that once I got out that chair and looked in the mirror, I was in pure bliss.

#100HappyDays: Day 2

I got a mani/pedi today and one would expect a little pampering would make me feel like a room without a roof, but surprisingly, it was the “Happy” song by Pharrell Williams that elevated my spirits. I was driving in my car when the song came in the radio, and within a matter of seconds, I was singing along:

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

Kudos to Pharrell for creating a song that has made a powerful impact on people around the world. For, within the first seconds of this tune, my emotions are guaranteed to match the song’s title.

#100HappyDays: The Challenge

What makes you happy?100HappyDayChallenge

Hard question huh? To tell you the truth, when I first asked myself this question, I couldn’t answer it either.

Knowing what makes you happy is crucial to your well being and overall satisfaction with life. For, how can you be content if you don’t know what makes you feel at peace? A lot of people try to make themselves happy with tangible and intangible items like, a home, a car, a Macbook, fame, or even climbing the corporate ladder. Some of the happiest people I’ve encountered have led the most simplistic lifestyle. Perhaps we don’t need such expensive items to make us happy.

So, I ask myself today and for the next 100 days, what makes me happy? The 100HappyDays challenge requires me to post what makes me happy for 100 consecutive days. From today, May 1, 2014 through August 8, 2014, I will post a picture on my blog and on Twitter of something that makes me happy each day. Follow me on Twitter @scribsandtosts, #100happydays.

By the end of this challenge, I hope to have a collection of simple items, ideas, and people who make me happy. The collection will inspire me on rainy days and provide a new perspective on life.
